The iconic Frenchmans Cap is a must-do hike for any outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore a gorgeous area with an intriguing diversity of landscapes, all enjoyed along one of the most well-maintained trails in Tasmania.
Rising sharply from the heart of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, this 46 km return trail leads hikers through buttongrass plains, lush temperate rainforest, and alpine plateaus, culminating in a dramatic summit climb to the 1,446-metre quartzite peak of Frenchmans Cap.
Typically completed over 3 to 5 days, the hike includes overnight stays at Lake Vera and Lake Tahune huts, both offering basic facilities and stunning natural surrounds. The final ascent rewards walkers with panoramic views stretching from Macquarie Harbour to Cradle Mountain—on a clear day, it’s nothing short of breathtaking.
While the track is well-marked and maintained, it’s rated Grade 5 due to steep, muddy sections and unpredictable alpine weather. For those prepared and experienced, Frenchmans Cap delivers a truly unforgettable Tasmanian wilderness adventure.
