Overland Track: Tasmania’s Iconic Wilderness Journey

Winding through the heart of the Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, the Overland Track is Tasmania’s most iconic long-distance hike and a rite of passage for wilderness lovers. This 65 km, six-day trek takes you deep into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, showcasing a dramatic landscape of glacial valleys, alpine meadows, ancient rainforests, and rugged mountain peaks.

Route Highlights & Optional Side Trips

Starting at Ronny Creek near Cradle Mountain, the trail leads south to Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest lake. Along the way, hikers can take optional side trips to waterfalls, alpine lakes, and even summit Mount Ossa, Tasmania’s highest peak at 1,617 metres. During the off-season (May to October), hikers also have the flexibility to walk the Overland Track in the reverse direction, heading north from Lake St Clair to Cradle Mountain, though conditions can be more challenging and services may be limited.
