The legendary South Coast Track is a bucket-list wilderness trek for seasoned hikers seeking raw, remote beauty along Tasmania’s wild southern edge. Stretching 85 km from Melaleuca to Cockle Creek, this multi-day journey traverses some of the most pristine and untouched landscapes in the country.
Beginning with a light aircraft flight into Melaleuca, the adventure unfolds through button grass plains, dense rainforest, towering cliffs, and sweeping beaches. Hikers navigate river crossings, muddy plains, and exposed alpine ridges, with highlights including the Ironbound Range, Louisa Bay, and the dramatic South Cape Rivulet.
Typically completed over 6 to 8 days, the track is entirely off-grid—no huts, no facilities, and no mobile reception. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, carrying all gear and food, and prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. The trail is rated Grade 5 due to its remoteness, physical demands, and technical challenges.
For those with the stamina and spirit, the South Coast Track offers a rare immersion into Tasmania’s wild soul—where solitude, resilience, and awe-inspiring scenery combine to create one of Australia’s most unforgettable wilderness experiences.
