Lake Rhona and the Denison Range offer one of Tasmania’s most striking alpine experiences — a remote, shimmering glacial lake framed by white quartzite sand and surrounded by a rugged skyline of dolerite peaks. For hikers seeking a blend of dramatic scenery, solitude, and true wilderness immersion, this journey is unforgettable.
The track begins with a long approach through the Gordon River Valley, crossing buttongrass plains and sections of rainforest before climbing steadily onto the Denison plateau. After the ascent, walkers are rewarded with the breathtaking sight of Lake Rhona: a crystal‑clear alpine lake ringed by a natural quartzite beach that feels almost surreal in such a wild setting.
Most hikers complete the trip as a 2–3 day return walk to Lake Rhona, camping on the sandy shores beneath the towering walls of Reeds Peak. For those with more experience and time, the route can be extended into a multi‑day traverse of the Denison Range — a remote, off‑track adventure across exposed ridgelines, rocky scrambles, and expansive alpine basins. The views across the South West wilderness are immense, stretching toward the Spires, the Prince of Wales Range, and the distant Arthur Ranges.
Although the initial track is well‑defined, the walk is rated Grade 5 due to river crossings, muddy sections, steep climbs, and the challenging nature of the extended range traverse. Weather can shift rapidly, and hikers must be fully self‑sufficient.
For those prepared to take it on, Lake Rhona and the Denison Range deliver a rare combination of beauty and remoteness — a place where Tasmania’s alpine wilderness feels both serene and spectacular.
